Are you struggling to attract funding to achieve your program goals in 2024 ? If so, you are not alone. a significant number of Civil Society organizations (CSOs) and National Non-Governmental Organizations(NNGOs) struggle to secure predictable, flexible and adequate funding to implement their innovative or life saving programs across the global south.
One of our core areas of expertise is to advise such NNGOs how to improve their chances of securing funding for their programs, we have done training and capacity building for many NNGOs to ensure they are not only relevant but also put in place mechanism and mitigate risks associated with managing grants. while the grand bargain commitments seek more support and funding tools for local and national responders, evidence shows these commitments didn't materialize frustrating many NNGOs.
In this context, a significant number of NNGOs are unable to response to local humanitarian and/or emergency needs due to lack of funding or they lack the connections, financial resources or weight of INGOs. for instance, INGOs have the access of their government embassies or donors in their own countries who fund their projects with little ask, while NNGOs don't have that privilege. I understand this is not a fight between NNGOs and INGOs, but to highlight a significant problem and find way to help NNGOs secure more resources to help their own communities.
To survive, NNGOs have to rely on what the INGOs want them to do and must accept terms that they would not accept if there was equal footing. in other words, the power imbalance between INGOs and NNGOs is quite staggering.
The Grand Bargain Localisation Worktream needs urgent revisiting to ensure pledges are met and NNGOs are not only properly funded but also their voices are heard load and clear.
At Abdulahi Consulting, we want to open dialogue and better equip NNGOs so that they improve their funding outcomes. one such initiative is linking between NNGOs and donor agencies in the global north and to start conversations of direct funding to NNGOs in many global emergencies.
We would love to hear from you, If you want to contribute or have your say on the issues raised in this blog post, please reach out to us on info@abdulahiconsulting.com or leave a comment.
